A reconsideration of the Harsanyi-Sen-Weymark debate on utilitarianism

چکیده

Harsanyi claimed that his Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems provide a justification for utilitarianism. This claim has been strongly resisted, notably by Sen and Weymark; the latter argue that Harsanyi has shown only that there exists a representation of the social preference ordering that is formally utilitarian in structure, not that utilitarianism itself is true. One prominent thread of this criticism concerns the relationship between the (intrapersonal) cardinal structure of von Neumann-Morgenstern utility and that of well-being: Harsanyi apparently requires the assumption that these cardinal structures coincide, while Sen and Weymark object that this is a substantive assumption for which no justification has been offered. The present paper argues for an alternative account of the relationship between Harsanyi’s theorems and the claims of the original utilitarians. The key thesis is that, far from being a term with precise and independent quantitative content whose relationship to von NeumannMorgenstern utility is then a substantive question, terms such as ‘wellbeing’ suffer — or (at least) did suffer, prior to the advent of decision theory — from indeterminacy regarding precisely which quantity they refer to. If so, then (on the issue of cardinal structures that this paper focusses on) Harsanyi has gone as far towards defending ‘utilitarianism in the original sense’ as could coherently be asked.

Measurement theory and the foundations of utilitarianism

This article reconsiders the Harsanyi–Sen debate concerning whether Harsanyi is justified in interpreting his Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems as providing axiomatizations of utilitarianism. Sen’s criticism and its formalization by Weymark are based on the claim that von Neumann–Morgenstern utility theory is ordinal, whereas Harsanyi’s utilitarian conclusions require cardinal utility...

Measurement-Theoretic Foundations of Preference Aggregation Logic for Weighted Utilitarianism

Harsanyi [4, 5] develops expected utility theory of von Neumann and Morgenstern [21] to provide two formalizations of utilitarianism. Weymark [22, 23] refers to these results as Harsanyi’s Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems. In this paper, we are concerned only with Aggregation Theorem. Sen [6] argues that von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility theory is an ordinal theory and, theref...

Generalized Utilitarianism and Harsanyi ’ S Impartial Observer Theorem

We provide an axiomatization of generalized utilitarian social welfare functions in the context of Harsanyi’s impartial observer theorem. To do this, we reformulate Harsanyi’s problem such that lotteries over identity (accidents of birth) and lotteries over outcomes (life chances) are independent. We show how to accommodate (…rst) Diamond’s critique concerning fairness and (second) Pattanaik’s ...

Fairness and Utilitarianism without Independence

In this work we reconsider Harsanyi’s celebrated (1953, 1955, 1977) utilitarian impartial observer theorem. Departing from Harsanyi’s individual-centered approach, we argue that, when societal decisions are at stake, postulates must not be drawn from individualistic behavior. Rather, they should be based on societal norms. Hence, notions like societal fairness should explicitly be taken as the ...
